Project description

Koolunga Road was constructed over 20 plus years ago and sealed 7m wide to accommodate the vehicles of the day. Access by road trains has resulted in significant edge break damage encroaching up to 300mm into the travel lanes. Significant rutting is also occurring in the outer wheel path causing stormwater to pool and creating a hazard for motorist. Council is incurring significant costs yearly undertaking repairs and fighting a losing battle to maintain the width of the sealed surface. The road is a critical community access route linking the townships of Koolunga and Brinkworth, where many children from Koolunga attend the preschool located at the Brinkworth Primary School. It is also a significant tourist route, popular with Gray Nomads following the old broad-gauge rail lines and traversing to the Flinders Rangers. Many of these visitors stay at the RV site located within Brinkworth. The road currently carries an average of 260 vpd during the peak harvest season at an average of 54 heavy vehicles and 190vpd outside of the peak period.

The work proposed includes stabilisation 3m wide, 150mm deep on each side of Koolunga Road from the centre of the travel lane. The seal will be widened from the existing 7m to 8.5m by applying a two coat 14/7mm C170 spray seal on the 5.05km section of Koolunga Road from the end of the kerb and water table at the Brinkworth township heading north to Boucaut Road. Line marking will include centre and edge lines to help prevent heavy vehicles from straying off the sealed surface.

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
