The project will replace the existing bridge over the Barron River located on the Kennedy Highway near Kuranda.
The Kennedy Highway is a major east west link connecting Cairns to Far North Queensland. The highway crosses difficult terrain and is an important route for local residents, freight and tourists. The existing bridge near the township of Kuranda was constructed in 1963 and is experiencing ongoing metal fatigue and cracking, which has now resulted in the bridge being restricted to vehicles under 42 tonnes. A new bridge is required to replace the existing structure; improving key freight and commuter access across Far North Queensland.
The Australian Government has committed $245 million and the Queensland Government $245 million towards the $490 million project.
A business case for the new bridge has been completed in November 2024. Planning, design and early works are currently underway by the Queensland Government. Construction on the new bridge is expected to commence in early 2028 and be completed in early 2032.
