Project description

The approximately 480 metres of Gillespie Road from De Fontenay has been successfully upgraded to spray seal in past financial years but the remaining 640 metres which links up to McDonald Road remains unsealed. This unsealed section is highly prone to erosion potholes and wear leading to significant safety concerns. During dry weather the road generates excessive dust creating uncomfortable and potentially hazardous conditions for drivers especially when transitioning between the sealed and unsealed sections. Additionally this area has become a consistent source of customer complaints. Upgrading this remaining stretch of road to a spray seal would not only enhance the safety and comfort of drivers but it would also complete the connection to the Sturt Highway integrating the road into the broader bitumen network.

The upgrade will involve grading the existing sub base to achieve a stable formation. A 32 mm PM-grade road base will then be constructed over a 640 metre stretch with a width of 8 metres and a compacted thickness of 150 mm. Appropriate compaction will ensure the long term durability of the road. Once the base layer is properly compacted a 14/7 spray seal treatment will be applied across a 6.2-metre width along the full 640 metre length. This design will provide 900 mm wide shoulders on each side ensuring safe space for cyclists and pedestrians. The final works will include line marking and the installation of relevant signage once the spray seal is completed. These finishing touches will improve road safety while creating a more structured and navigable route. The upgrade will eliminate the need for ongoing grading and maintenance providing a safer more reliable road for all users including local residents commuters and recreational users accessing the Sturt Highway.
