Project description

Galway Avenue in Broadview is a key collector road linking Regency Road and North East Road, carrying up to ~6,000 vehicles per day and supporting frequent public transport movements, with Torrens Transit services operating day and night (including weekday services at 15-minute frequencies). Galway Avenue also functions as a secondary bicycle route within the Levels (Mawson Lakes) to City Bikeway. Traffic volumes have increased since the installation of traffic signals at Regency Road in 2017, further elevating the corridor’s strategic role and the need for fit-for-purpose intersection control. In response to community concerns regarding traffic management in Galway Avenue—raised through a petition to Council in 2018—Council undertook public consultation and community forums in 2018 and 2019. Following this engagement, Council (18 December 2018) supported a motion to investigate a roundabout or alternative solution at the Galway Avenue / Rheims Street / Jellicoe Street intersection. Design works commenced in 2024/25 to develop concept designs for a roundabout, informed by extensive planning and traffic assessments to validate the preferred location and treatment. Delivery has been structured as a staged program to de-risk implementation and optimise outcomes. Stage 1 was completed in 2024/25 and comprised road pavement reconstruction of Galway Avenue, funded through SLRP, delivering a corridor renewal from Collingswood Avenue to North East Road. Stage 2 was recently awarded funding and will deliver construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Galway Avenue, Rheims Street and Jellicoe Street. The roundabout is targeted to improve traffic operations and road safety performance by addressing identified traffic and crash trends, while supporting bus movements and maintaining the corridor’s role as a key cycling connection. The Stage 1 Deliverable was the road pavement reconstruction of Galway Avenue occurred in 2024/25 with funding received from SLRP to fund the delivery of the roadworks of Galway Avenue from Collingswood Avenue to North East Road. Stage 2 Deliverable was the recently awarded funding to deliver to the Roundabout Construction which involves the construction of new roundabout at the intersection of Galway Avenue, Rheims Street and Jellicoe Streets to address traffic and crash data as identified.
