Project description

The Kempe Road (Rural Road) is a 189 km primary unsealed outback road that links the townships of Oodnadatta in the north to Coober Pedy in the south on the Stuart Highway. The first 45 km of the Kempe Road north of Coober Pedy is sealed, with the remaining 144 km unsealed. This road corridor provides a crucial link in outback South Australia and is utilised by freight and tourism industries, pastoralists, and local communities. Following significant rain events, unsealed low-lying sections of the road and a number of floodways are responsible for closing the road for extended periods of time, which impacts heavily on all road users reliant on this road. The targeted flood resilience works will include improving the pavement crossfall, improving roadside drainage, raising the unsealed pavement level through floodways with a robust material to provide a stabilised surface.
