Project description

This project forms part of the $250 million Great Western Highway - Katoomba to Lithgow project. It involves the upgrade of 2.5 kilometres of the existing two and three lane undivided highway at South Bowenfels to three lanes divided by a central median for the full length. It also includes construction of a concrete arch and earth embankment over Whites Creek with two lanes in each direction.

Benefits

The upgrade is expected to improve safety and reliability on this section of highway by reducing traffic incidents that occur in adverse weather conditions. It is also expected to reduce potential road closures in the winter months due to black ice.

Funding

The Australian Government is contributing $200 million to the $250 million Great Western Highway - Katoomba to Lithgow package with the New South Wales Government contributing $50 million. As part of this package of works, the Australian Government is fully funding the $64.32 million Forty Bends Upgrade.

Timetable

Construction commenced in early 2015 and was completed in mid 2017.
