Project description

The Freight Rail Revitalisation program helped to raise the quality of the major lines on the Tasmanian rail network through selective sleepering and track replacement. Culverts were strengthened, drainage and formation works undertaken and level crossings upgraded. These works built on upgrades under the previous Australian Government funded program that were designed to keep the lines at an operational standard, with the objective of improving overall safety, reliability and thereby competitiveness of the rail network. The Freight Rail Revitalisation program consists of two projects - one for Tasmanian rail lines on the National Land Transport Network (the Network), and one for those off the Network (Off-Network).

Benefits

The program helped to reduce the operational costs of freight movements by providing additional rail capacity, improved reliability and reduced transit times. These works will also help reduce derailments.

Funding

The Australian and Tasmanian governments each contributed up to $119.6 million to this $239.2 million project.

Timetable

Works commenced on the program in September 2015 and were completed in June 2023.
