Project description

The Diamantina Developmental Road is a north-south road linking Mount Isa to Charlesville. The Boulia to Dajarra section is mostly sealed to a narrow 3.8 metre standard, and services a number of abattoirs and cattle grazing areas in northern Queensland.

The project involves widening and rehabilitation of over 12km of road from a narrow single-lane seal to a six-metre wide seal to improve productivity, resilience and safety on the Boulia to Dajarra section.

Benefits

The project will deliver the following improvements to the cattle supply chain:

improved road safety by widening the pavement seal to allow for two-way traffic
reduced damage and stress to livestock by widening the pavement seal to remove the need for cattle trucks to leave the sealed pavement at high speed when approaching oncoming vehicles
improved travel time and reliability by providing two-way sealed road conditions
reduced whole-of-life asset management costs by strengthening and widening pavements to reduce accelerated road wear and damage by heavy vehicles

Funding

The Australian Government has committed up to $4.03 million towards this $5.03 million project.

Timetable

Construction commenced in March 2019 and was completed in May 2019.
