The Adelaide - Tarcoola Rail Upgrade Acceleration project has upgraded approximately 600km of track on the Adelaide to Tarcoola rail line by replacing 1,200km of 47 kilogram per metre (kg/m) rail with a stronger 60 kg/m rail. This project also includes bridge strengthening works to allow for higher axle loads (25 tonnes at 80km per hour) and where appropriate other associated upgrades (i.e. level crossing renewals). The upgrade is built upon the existing 100km of track enhancements already complete on the Adelaide to Tarcoola section of track.
The upgrade has addressed deterioration and failure rates on this section of track which has improved reliability and reduced future expenditure on maintenance. The upgrade has also improved the productivity and operating performance by enabling a lift in the maximum axle loading from 23 tonnes to 25 tonnes at 80km per hour.
The project has also provided wider economic benefits including local employment.
The Australian Government's contribution is capped at $252 million in equity to the Australian Rail Track Corporation for the delivery of this project.
This project commenced in mid 2017 and was completed in early 2021.
