Project description

The Melbourne Airport Rail Link Business Case examined the cost, timing and optimal delivery model for the Melbourne Airport Rail Link (MARL) project. The MARL will provide a passenger rail service between Melbourne Airport and the Melbourne CBD, via Sunshine Station. It will utilise the Melbourne Metro Tunnel, providing direct access to a range of train stations in the CBD.

Benefits

The Preliminary Business Case established a common evidence base and undertook a needs and options analysis. The Detailed Business Case identified the project cost, timing and optimal delivery model.

Funding

The Australian Government initially committed $30 million towards the development of both the Preliminary and Detailed Business Cases. This was increased to over $100 million, with an additional $70.68 million of funding drawn from the Melbourne Airport Rail Link's existing $5 billion commitment. The Victorian Government has committed $101.88 million to the business case process and early planning activities.

Timetable

The Preliminary Business Case was completed in August 2018. The Detailed Business Case was provided to the Australian Government in December 2021, and released in September 2022.
