Project description

This section of Browns Gap Road requires immediate intervention before its condition degrades to a point where full reconstruction will be required. Cracking is evident in many locations which is leading to potholing. Guard rails are dislodged from the embankment in a number of occasions. The asphalt previously used to seal this section of road does not provide sufficient grip in winter months to adequately deal with winter frosts. Slip resistance in these conditions is negligible causing many accidents. Drainage needs to be reinstated along much of the length to protect the edges of the carriageway.

The 1,500 metre length of carriageway will be overlaid with a high friction asphalt seal. Proposed treatments include asphalt-carborundum mix and asphalt - steel furnace slag mixes to provide a smooth, high friction running surface. Failures will be blocked out and rehabilitated before the reseal to ensure longevity. Embankments will be reconstructed and the traffic barriers re-seated. Drainage will be reinstated and where required, the carriageway remediated where shoulder failures have occurred. This work will be co-funded by Australian Government Blackspot Funding.

Total cost of proposed project is $680,000
