The project will develop a strategic business case that will investigate options to provide faster passenger rail services from Perth to Bunbury. The project will identify existing constraints and determine future demand and operational requirements. The project will include a planning and investment program that will identify potential projects, cost and staging options to help guide future investment decisions. The project will also consider population growth, travel patterns, private sector financing opportunities and access to jobs, services and affordable housing.
The project will determine the economic, environmental and social costs and benefits of improved passenger rail services from Perth to Bunbury.
The estimated cost of the strategic business case is $8 million. The Australian Government is contributing $4 million (capped) and the Western Australian Government $4 million.
The strategic business case commenced in mid 2021 and is expected to be completed in late 2024.
