Project description

This project will develop a business case to support upgrading the Bruce Highway with the provision of 2-lane Collector Distributor roads on either side of the highway from Uhlmann Road interchange to Buchanan Road interchange. The business case will set out how the Collector Distributor roads will cater for the existing service centres located on this section of the highway, including improving safety and reducing highway congestion from weaving and merging traffic. The business case will also highlight how currnet traffic congestion is projected to grow from freight and passenger vehicles. It will take into account forecasts to identify how this section of the highway will be operating at 109% of existing 6-lane capacity by 2031 and 134% by 2041. Safety issues are being identified in the area with high crash sites due to the mixing of local and longer distance travel and weaving/merging traffic. The project will help improve traffic capacity, increase safety and unlock economic growth.

Benefits

Reduced congestion and improved travel times, improved road safety for all road users, and improved accessibility and connectivity of road networks.

Funding

Total funding committment of $10 million (Australian Government committment of up to $8 million towards this project. Queensland Government contribution of up to $2 million towards this project).

Timetable

The business case commenced in October 2023 and is expected to be completed in mid 2026.
