Project description

The project will duplicate the two-lane section of the Cairns Western Arterial Road between Redlynch Connector Road and the Captain Cook Highway to a four-lane dual carriageway.

Funding

The Australian Government has committed $216 million and the Queensland Government $54 million.

Timetable

The Queensland Government are currently updating the business case, planning and detailed design for the project. The updated business case will confirm the scope, cost, benefits, risks and timeframes for the project. This work commenced in September 2024 and is expected to be completed in early 2026. Once completed, the business case will be considered by the Australian and Queensland Governments. Preparation works for Section 1 (Lake Placid Road to Captain Cook Highway) commenced in August 2024 and are expected to be completed in early 2026. The works include relocating services including telecommunications and electricity, demolition of acquired properties and vegetation removal between Hythe Street and Caravonica State School.
