The project will develop a Final Business Case for a new freight rail link from Port Botany to Western Sydney.
Stage 1 will help to identify and prioritise options for the intermodal terminal and a dedicated freight link from Port Botany.
The project scope includes investigation of:
- 30km dual track, dedicated freight line; and
- a 24/7 open access intermodal terminal in Western Sydney.
The business case will provide a benefit by providing an evidence base for:
- the provision of a connection to a rail freight route on the National Land Transport Network.
- Improved productivity.
- Reduction in transport emissions.
- Provision of safety improvements.
- Improvement in road safety through road-rail freight mode shift.
The Australian Government is funding on a 50:50 ratio in conjunction with the NSW Government.
Planning is expected to commence in late 2024 and be completed by mid 2028.
