Project description

Frederick Street is classified as a Local Distributor. The road carries a significant amount of traffic associated with both local and tourist travel. It also serves as part of a bus route servicing surrounding schools, businesses, the Boulevard Shopping Centre, and the Broome Airport. Frederick Street links the Cable Beach tourist precinct, Cable Beach subdivision, the Broome Recreation & Aquatic Centre (BRAC), and the Port to China Town. Category 6 vehicles (RAV 6 - 36.5 m long truck) and below are allowed to operate on Port Drive and Frederick Street to the airport. The Shire’s first priority for this roadway is to ensure all intersections are functioning smoothly and safely with consideration of forthcoming developments. in 2024, the Shire engaged consultant KCTT to complete a traffic study of the BRAC entry & exits as part of the masterplan considerations for this public facility with consideration of other development that area also happening along Frederick Street. The assessment recommends the construction of a roundabout with new pedestrian links on Frederick Street should be undertake to upgrade the existing exit-only arrangement. This project has been prioritised by the Shire of Broome based on the projects currently in Roads 2040 due to the immediate safety issues at this location and expected significant growth in traffic through this intersection with the coming BRAC masterplan projects and some large scale commercial developments underway along Frederick Street. Some minor drainage issues at the intersection will also be addressed through the reconstruction of the intersection and further upgrades to a Type 7 either side of the intersection shall be delivered where feasible in the project budget. Further projects on Frederick Street shall be undertaken in stages over several years where prioritised against other road projects in Broome from Roads 2040.

Construction of a roundabout intersection, lighting improvements, drainage improvements and pedestrian network upgrades. The $1,692,500 budget for the project is funded by $880,000 of Road Project grant funding and $812,500 Roads to Recovery funding.

Total cost of proposed project is $1,692,500
