Project description

Burns Gully Bridge is one of our remaining Timber bridges in need of an upgrade and is our top priority for replacement. The bridge is only one lane in width, so it poses a safety risk to vehicles if a mistake is made by traffic on Platform Rd. With increases in agricultural freight and rural housing construction and the road being an alternative route if New Highway access is restricted the bridge needs to be able to facilitate these needs. The bridge is in poor condition and seems to be costing us more each year in maintenance. We expect the bridge will need to be load limited in the immediate future if we do not upgrade the bridge. It has an estimated 8-10 years of remaining useful life. Work proposed is to upgrade the current timber bridge to a new concrete bridge with a new useful life of 100+ years. The other funding behind the project is currently proposed to come from the Bridge Renewal Program as we are waiting on the outcome of our grant submission. Council may fund this with reserve infrastructure funds if we are not successful.
