Project description

Significant travel delays are currently experienced along Yawalpah Road, Pimpama during morning and afternoon peak travel periods. With development underway in Pimpama, these travel delays are forecast to continue to increase. The cause of these traffic delays is a result of road capacity deficiency from the M1 to Kerkin Rd. This project will aid in alleviating this issue.

The Yawalpah Road Upgrade project which involves widening Yawalpah Road, constructing a new road bridge over the existing rail line and upgrading intersections. Previously a two-lane road, Yawalpah Road will be converted into a four-lane urban road for most of the road corridor with a third westbound lane from Gawthern Drive to Nexus Drive. On-road cycle lanes will be provided along with a 2.5m wide off-road shared pathway for the length of the project. The following project works are scheduled to be completed during the 2025-26 financial year: - Road pavement, kerb and channel and stormwater drainage for 2 through lanes west bound from Gainsborough State School to Gawthern Drive and 3 westbound lanes from Gawthern Drive to the new bridge. - New signalised intersection at Yawalpah Road/Cox Road intersection to cater for emergency vehicles. - Traffic signals upgrade at Yawalpah Road/Swan Road intersection to accommodate the additional (third) westbound lane from Gawthern Drive to the bridge. - New off-road shared path on the southern side of Yawalpah Road between Dixon Drive and the new bridge. - Masonry block retaining wall in front of Gainsborough State School and between Gawthern Drive and Cox Road (southern side of Yawalpah Road). - Completion of the new bridge over the rail corridor and the Old Pacific Highway and approach retaining walls. - Rehabilitation of the eastbound carriageway pavement. There are 2 separate Principal Contractors on this project. The roadworks component is being undertaken by the City of Gold Coast - Infrastructure Delivery team. Georgiou Group Pty Ltd has been engaged to carry out work for the bridge construction. As this project is jointly funded, the City of Gold Coast is providing funding for the remaining cost of the project not funded through the Roads to Recovery Program. During the 2024-25 financial year, the Roads to Recovery Program funded $7,694,745 towards this project.

The road pavement is being final sealed or resealed as per Council maintenance protocols.The entire section of pavement will be spray sealed and appropriate sized stone applied. In some instances emulsions or micro seals may be applied.
