Project description

Southern Highlands Overtaking Opportunities project comprises rail infrastructure works at two separate locations, at both Werai near Moss Vale, and Joppa Junction near Goulburn, to enable freight trains up to 1,800 metres in length to be overtaken by faster services. The works proposed at both locations are installation of four high speed crossovers, associated track, civil, signalling and electrical works.

Benefits

The Southern Highlands Overtaking Opportunities project aims to increase flexibility, reduce delays, reduce operational costs and reduce congestion on the network, in particular for freight and passenger services on the Sydney to Melbourne rail line.

Funding

The Australian Government and the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) are jointly funding this $54.160 million project.

Timetable

Construction is underway for this project and completion scheduled for mid-2026.

Bremer Valley Road, Callington , South Australia - 058728-15SA-RTR

Following on from the Completion 3500m of during 2014/15 FY Bremer Valley Road provides a strategic route that links the areas of Harrogate ,Rockliegh and Monarto to the township of Callington and the South Eastern Freeway. It acts as a bus route that transports student to Callington, Nairne, Mount Barker and Murray Bridge.As it stand Bremer Valley Road is councils only Rural Link Road that does not meet the basic Levels of Service as detailed above. In its current form Bremer Valley Road is unsealed with a varying width ranging from 8.5m to 9.5m and over the last 5 years has required significant maintenance resulting in nearly 400 man and plant hours allocated to Patrol Grading. This equates to an annual plant and labour allocation of 80 hours (2 weeks) and a maintenance bill of nearly $15,000 per annum.Rehabilitate and upgrade 3600m of the existing granular pavement by introducing an additional 150mm of limestone rubble. In addition, seal the upgraded pavement with a 14/7 spray to meet Rural City of Murray Bridge Rural Link Standards.(3.5km of this project was completed during the 2014/15 FY)

Barcaldine - Isisford Road(Rural Road) Barcaldine - 058734-15QLD-RTR

Existing carriageway is an unsealed gravel road prone to damage (scouring) during high rainfall events. Creek runs directly across this chainage blocks access between properties and town.Reconstruction of gravel section of road to an 8m standard to a pavement depth of 200mm. Prime and seal the reconstructed pavement to a width of 6m. Pipes are to be installed in this reconstruction process.Total cost of proposed project is $200,000

White Road, Monarto South, South Australia - 058735-15SA-RTR

White Road, currently unsealed carries large volume freight movement to and from Ingham's Chickens Breeder Facility (Chicken Growing. As White Road runs parallel to the South Eastern Freeway (within 30m at is shortest point) there is often dust issues on the freeway. In addition due the freight volume maintenance of White Road is a high cost item for Rural City of Murray BridgeRehabilitate and improve the unsealed granular pavement by installing additional material and applying 14/7mm spray seal. Pavement works will be undertaken by Council works staff with sealing works contracted to Council sealing contractor.

Buckiinguy Road, Warren - 058736-15NSW-RTR

Existing narrow sealed road has failed (rutted and extensive potholes) and single lane width is dangerous to trafficProposed to rip existing 3.6m wide seal, recycle existing formation to correct shape and seal to 5m width. Length of work is 17kmTotal cost of proposed project is $778,631

Existing bitumen seal shows signs of fatigue and deterioration.Undertake preparatory works to repair pavement as necessary and seal the existing (repaired) pavement with a polymer modified binder.Total cost of proposed project is $326,964
