Stage 2 of the Murraylands Road project remains unsealed, presenting safety concerns such as potholes, dust, flying gravel, and uneven surfaces that increase the risk of vehicle instability. As a vital freight and community access route, Murraylands Road plays a key role in supporting regional connectivity and has been recognised as locally significant in the Murraylands & Riverland LGA 2030 Regional Transport Plan.The Murraylands Road Improvement Project, delivered by Mid Murray Council, will upgrade 2.5 kilometres of unsealed road to a bitumen-sealed standard, enhancing safety and freight access in the Murraylands and Riverland region. The works include road widening from 7 to 11 metres, sealing of shoulders, line marking, signage, and stormwater improvements to support heavy vehicle traffic and improve overall road efficiency.

Bollen Road requires urgent reconstruction to accommodate current and projected traffic volumes exceeding 5,000 vehicles per day, driven by nearby developments including a new school, church, childcare centre, and proposed recreational facilities. The existing carriageway is too narrow, with inadequate drainage, lighting, and pedestrian access—particularly impacting school children, bus users, and residents with mobility needs. The upgrade will address these deficiencies by widening the road where possible, incorporating shared paths and safe crossings, and bringing the road up to urban collector standards. In constrained sections, a divided carriageway and tree-sensitive treatments will preserve mature vegetation while enhancing safety, sight lines, and speed management.The Bollen Road upgrade includes the full reconstruction of approximately 1.16 kilometres of road, widening the existing 6.0–6.2 metre carriageway to a compliant 7.2 metres to meet urban collector standards and support increasing traffic, including school and public transport services. A split carriageway design between Mansfield Avenue and Memorial Drive will preserve mature vegetation, with tree-sensitive pavement treatments used where necessary to protect roots and ensure a 30-year design life. The project includes full-length kerbing, major drainage upgrades to manage 1-in-100-year stormwater flows and raised platforms at intersections to address speeding and enhance safety, all bus-compatible and aligned with existing gradients. Complementary works include a separately funded shared-use path on the eastern verge and a new footpath connecting the school to nearby residential areas, supported by safe pedestrian crossings to improve access and connectivity.

Given the road’s vital role in providing access to the Valley Lakes/Ketla Malpi precinct—one of Mount Gambier’s key tourist and recreation areas—proactive rehabilitation is essential to maintain safe and reliable access for all users, including families, buses, and service vehicles.The works will involve full reconstruction and pavement strengthening along the 0.5 km stretch to address surface defects and restore structural integrity. The scope includes reprofiling for improved drainage, renewing line marking, enhancing edge treatments, and reinforcing shoulders where necessary. This upgrade will ensure the road meets regional transport standards and continues to support tourism and community access to the Valley Lakes/Ketla Malpi precinct.

Located within an 80 km/h zone, the road experiences significant interaction between heavy and commuter vehicles. Widening the road and shoulders will address these issues and significantly improve safety for all users.This project involves the reconstruction of 1.15 km of Supple Road with a new granular pavement and a 40mm asphalt surface, designed to accommodate increased heavy vehicle loading. The upgrade includes widened sealed and unsealed shoulders, improved stormwater capacity, and enhanced drainage. The existing road, which has reached the end of its service life, will see its overall carriageway width expanded from 6 metres to 9.4 metres, while the pavement depth will increase from a variable 200–300mm to a consistent 380mm, ensuring greater durability and performance.

Finniss Vale Drive is a key tourist and community access route, providing the only access to the Township of Second Valley. The existing pavement and seal are nearing the end of their service life, with significant deformation and cracking. Limited stormwater infrastructure has resulted in uncontrolled runoff into private properties, prompting several resident complaints about flooding. To address these issues, Council will undertake full pavement renewal and roadside drainage improvements along a 760-metre section of the road. The project involves the renewal of a 760-metre section of Finniss Vale Drive and includes engineering and geotechnical assessments, service location, and vegetation clearance as needed. It will deliver a full-depth pavement reconstruction using suitable existing materials, a uniform 7.0-metre sealed carriageway, and upgraded roadside drainage to manage stormwater effectively. The works will also address property access, repair pavement failures, reseal the road, reinstate unsealed shoulders, and upgrade signage. Vegetation removal and trimming will ensure a safe clear zone along the travel lane.

This involves raising and crushing material internally, carting to site with trucks, spreading and levelling with graders and compacting with rollers. Will include replacement of drainage pipes where required
This route is critical for freight and community access, particularly supporting Nippy’s Fruit Juices and the town of Moorook. The road is currently narrow and in poor condition, posing safety risks. During the recent high river event, it served as the main detour due to flooding on Kingston Road. It will remain the primary alternative route in future flood events, highlighting the need for immediate upgrades to ensure safe and reliable access.The project involves upgrading and widening Wachtel Road and Loxton Drive from 6.4 metres to 7.6 metres over a 2.5 km length to better accommodate heavy vehicles and increased traffic volumes. Works include shoulder widening, full resealing, and line marking. Additionally, relocation of services—including power poles—will be undertaken to enable road realignment at the Wachtel Road and Loxton Drive intersection.
